Almost half of Brits want to buy motorhome or campervan this year

Spending more time on holiday in UK most popular reason for purchase

New research1 has revealed that almost half (44%) of British drivers would like to buy a motorhome or campervan in 2026.

A survey carried out on behalf of motorhome and campervan insurance specialist Safeguard has uncovered Brits’ holiday habits for the year ahead, and it signals a shift towards cost-effective trips.

While dreams of ownership remain high, the research found that 13% of respondents are unsure if they could afford to buy a motorhome or campervan this year. That is perhaps why 23% of Brits are considering renting a vehicle for their trips instead.

“Our research also shows that cost-conscious Brits are slightly more interested in purchasing a used vehicle (11%) than a new one (10%), with the same amount undecided about which option to take,” commented Mark Sheppard, senior trading manager at Safeguard. “This suggests that Brits aren’t hung up on the newest, more expensive models, but are more interested in getting a good deal and exploring the freedom and enjoyment a motorhome or campervan can offer.”

Buyers seeking to save money and reconnect with nature

As the cost of living crisis continues to bite, the research highlighted Brits’ current desire for cheaper holidays. One in six (16%) respondents stated that they want to save money on holidays this year, including on hotels and dining out.

This trend is reflected in the rising interest in motorhome and campervan holidays. The most popular reason for buying a motorhome or campervan, chosen by almost two-fifths (37%) of respondents, was to spend more time on holiday in the UK, avoiding the cost of flights, hotels and overseas spending.

By comparison, a quarter (27%) intend to holiday abroad this year, suggesting that Brits are increasingly looking to stay closer to home.

The other main trend uncovered by the survey was buyers seeking more independence while on holiday and to reconnect with the natural world.

The second most common incentive for purchasing a motorhome or campervan, cited by nearly a third (30%) of respondents, was to spend more time in nature, while a quarter (25%) pointed to the greater sense of freedom and adventure that a motorhome or campervan can offer.

That freedom extends to the extra space and options that motorhomes and campervans give owners. The research found that one in six (17%) respondents enjoy being able to take their home comforts with them on holiday, and more than one in ten (12%) value being able to go on holiday with their pet.

“Our survey’s findings point to a nation keen to cut back on holiday spending and get more bang for its buck,” explained Mark. “The staycation phenomenon that sprang up during lockdown shows no sign of slowing down as people look to spend time closer to home, surrounded by nature and comforting domestic items and animals.”

Buyers lacking awareness of specialist insurance

While many Brits are considering buying a motorhome or campervan, the research highlights a key insight: a significant number (40%) don’t realise the importance of choosing an expert broker who understands these vehicles. Specialist product knowledge, tailored cover and the right add‑ons can make a substantial difference to ensuring their motorhome is properly protected.

“We would suggest every motorhome and campervan owner speaks to an insurance broker and ensures they’re legally and suitably covered before getting behind the wheel,” said Mark.
