An increasing number of people are heading overseas at the last minute this year, the results of a study show.
According to figures from Sainsbury's Finance, 818,000 holidaymakers will book their holiday less than a week before they are due to set off.
Furthermore, the study showed that £5.46 billion of holiday spending will be put on credit cards.
Stuart McKeggie, head of Sainsbury's Credit Cards, said: "If you don’t think you will be able to clear this within a month, you should consider taking out a new credit card that offers an attractive interest-free period on purchases."
He noted that credit cards do have their benefits, especially when it comes to large purchases, but they must be approached with caution.
It was recently revealed that holiday bookings for September at lowcostholidays.com are up 75 per cent year-on-year.
Top selling holiday destinations for this month include the Canary Islands, Egypt and mainland Spain.
