Caravan insurance customers are helping to save the planet when they head off with their trailers for a summer break.
A new study from Lancaster University has examined the carbon emissions of a couple taking their caravan on a touring holiday.
In an exhaustive undertaking, researchers analysed every aspect of the holiday, from the energy required to deliver goods and services to the power required to boil a kettle for that all-important cup of tea.
It was found that the couple would emit just 4kg of carbon dioxide, significantly less than the half-tonne that could be generated by a could flying to Spain and back.
Skelwith Fold Caravan Park provided the scene for the experiment, with park owner Henry Wild commenting: "Even when the carbon footprint of the journey by car to the park is taken into account, staying in a caravan on a park is just about the greenest type of holiday you can enjoy."
Caravanners tempted to go abroad this summer were reminded last week by the RAC and Skoda to ensure that they research foreign driving laws before they travel.
