About the Author

My name is Rita Sadler and I’m the Operations Manager at Safeguard, which keeps me very busy but never too busy to chat about all things caravan and motorhome. Together with my husband, Ron, I am always out and about in my caravan, and this is where I’ll be sharing my adventures and experiences with you all.

There's no doubt about it, I love caravans! Not as much as I love my husband, Ron, though. He’d say he comes off second best to our second home, but that’s just not true! our two dogs Penny and Missy are up there as well!

In a way, I’ve got my dream job. My official title is Operations Manager at Safeguard,  that really just means I look after the team and make sure our customers are kept happy with their quote and cover. I’m fortunate I can combine my passion for ‘vanning with my work.  To be honest, I think it was my passion for ‘vanning that helped me get my job! Some days I manage to get out of the office and go and visit caravan and motorhome dealers around the UK. It’s through the dealers that many of you hear about us so I like to keep in touch with them. It also means I get a chance to nosey round the latest models, too. I love that. And when I’m not going to all the big shows, I’m managing the unit making sure you are all looked after!

Although I’ve worked at Safeguard for the past 8 years, next January I’ll have been with the Swinton Group for 30 years (funnily enough, that’s when we bought our very first caravan, a 9 year old Panther). I’m hoping for a bit of a do, but it won’t compare to mine and Ron’s 40th wedding anniversary two years ago – or my 60th, which we celebrated in the same month.

Picture of Missy and Penny Ron and I have a daughter, called Chrissy who used to come touring with us when she was little (unfortunately she did not inherited the passion for caravanning ,she likes to visit for a BBQ now.), and two marvelous dogs. Penny’s a Labrador cross, and Missy, a Whippet cross. We don’t go anywhere without them, unless it’s to Las Vegas, which was for our anniversary. When we head over to the East coast, where our caravan is mostly permanently pitched in a lovely spot, they’re always with us. Penny and Missy actually sleep in the shower room. In their beds, not on my towels!

Most people (especially my Safeguard customers) really want to know what caravan I own. Well, it’s a Lunar Lexon 2009 – a single axle fixed bed 4 berth. We bought it at the NEC February show and picked it up from one of my dealer friend Jim Lally at Pleasure Time Caravans  last April, Because we always take good care of of vans we had no difficulty  in selling our old Lunar to one of our friends on the site... We absolutely love the Lunar; it’s our pride and joy. In fact, it’s my personal favorite of the six caravans we’ve owned to date. Although I have to say it’s taken Ron a year to really get used to the fixed bed, he likes his space and you can’t get away with it the bed does take up a lot of room, but hey it’s nice just to be able to fall into bed at night.

You’ll hear lots about it in my blog entries as we spend half our lives camping. Or so it seems, what with our long weekends on the East coast at least three times a month . When I retire  we will find time to tour Europe. My ideal trip would be to stay somewhere warm on the continent, overlooking a secluded beach. Then when I get bored, we’d up sticks and go somewhere quiet near some big towns or a nice city where I can catch up on my shopping.

So, that’s a bit about me! I could go on, but I’d have nothing to say in my blog entries! I hope you enjoy them – do feel free to comment, especially if you’ve been to the same places as us or you have your own top tips to share with the ‘vanning community. You know how we like to do that.

Thanks for reading.

Getting ready for the caravan season

Posted: 23/03/2011 - by Rita Sadler

Well we have had a hectic social life since Christmas, most of it with our non caravanning friends and relations. However Ron has managed his lists of jobs (should I say my list!) and as I’m sure you can imagine he can't wait to get the van out and get away from all of the nagging - I'm saying this before he does!
Our non caravanning holiday

Don-t-fall-over-the-top---blog.jpgRon and I have just got back from 2 lovely relaxing weeks away in The Azores, Sao Miguel in Portugal. It’s an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean and our pin in the map choice for our non caravanning holiday.
Back to the Caravan

Ron-cooking---resized.jpgWell after our holiday abroad it was good to be back in the van. As you can see, Ron the pyromaniac was back in action smoking the place out, although I must say the steak was very nice.  We had a nice day out in Beverley in between the showers, with a walk at the West woods which are close to the racecourse. Penny and Missy certainly enjoyed the run around.
Wildlife at the caravan

Bird---resized.jpgAs many ‘vanners will know one of the best aspects of caravanning is the veritable feast of wildlife that we get to see especially at this time of year. So far we’ve seen all kinds of wildlife from Red Kites to Peregrine Falcons (see pic!) hedge hogs and a wiley fox who took a couple of pheasant hens whilst we were on site. Bird food appears regularly on our shopping list, Ron says it’s starting to cost him a fortune!
Helpful tips for all the new ‘vanners

Posted: 06/07/2010 - by Rita Sadler

Over the last few months I’ve noticed many new faces around the campsites I’ve been staying at. It’s always nice to see new people getting into the ‘vanning scene and there really has never been a better time to try it than now. Not only do you get a fantastic holiday but you’ll save on the pennies too.
Looking forward to the weekend

This week I’ve been really busy here at Safeguard while Ron has been up on his own at the caravan. With the weather being mixed all week I’ve been worried that he’d be sat there all bored on his lonesome – turns out though he loves the peace and quiet! He said he was really enjoying his time indoors with a bit of telly and his newspapers.
The millionaire caravanner

As a ‘vanner, the idea of a holiday without my ‘van just seems strange. The freedom of the open road, the friendly ‘vanning community – you don’t get that with other trips away. I try to explain this to some of my hotel-happy friends and they think I’m mad! They just don’t get it.

Going greener on a caravan holiday

Posted: 27/07/2010 - by Rita Sadler

The sight of a big Land Rover towing along an even bigger caravan may make some people assume that a ‘vanners holiday isn’t the greenest of summer retreats. However, you’d be dead wrong to think that. Hitting the road in a caravan is in fact one of the greenest ways to get away.
Price hikes at caravan sites

Posted: 06/08/2010 - by Rita Sadler

I’ve noticed on my recent travels that there are increasing numbers of unhappy ‘vanners around at the moment and it’s all down to the price hikes seen on many campsites around the country.

Electricity prices seem to be the main issue. Ron and I are used to having our electricity included in our staying fee but more and more sites are now adding it as an extra cost. Personally, it’s something Ron and I haven’t been happy about, we usually pay around £15 a night and get the electric included for that too!
Merry Christmas one and all!

Sorry it’s been a while since I last blogged – work has been hectic and I’ve been busy shopping for Christmas. I think I’ve got the majority of presents now – I’m sure I’ll have a last minute panic but that’s the benefit of having a retired husband who can nip to the shops for me!
Caravanning in Skegness

Posted: 12/08/2011 - by Rita Sadler

Just thought I’d give you a quick update on what we did last weekend whilst I’ve got a spare 5 minutes! Last weekend we decided to go on the road and visit old haunts like Skegness and Ingomells. We had a great time and it was a nice change to take the ‘van off the site. We went to the seaside and both Ron and I were surprised how close the motorhomers can get to the beach. Penny, the headless dog certainly enjoyed her play in the sea!
Welcome to my blog

You’ve no idea how thrilled I am to get my brand new blog up and running. I really am over the moon, having been talking about doing this for nearly two years. And now those clever young techies who made the Safeguard website have set me up. So, here we go…

Enjoying a lazy weekend at the caravan

Posted: 14/09/2010 - by Rita Sadler

After a weekend at home, Ron and I decided it was time to get back to our caravan and have a simply weekend watching the TV. So I got some treats in and plenty of nibbles and off we went.
Holiday but not with the caravan

Posted: 27/09/2010 - by Rita Sadler

Well I’m back in the office after a few weeks off. It seemed like ages since I’ve had time off work! The team are already working me to the bone though which gives them great pleasure I’m sure! Ron and I went off to Corfu to see friends that immigrated there about 5 years ago. I’ll go in more detail in my next blog post but we did a bit of sight seeing but it was mainly a relaxation holiday and we just took each day as it came rather than planning the holiday away.
Getting behind our team!

I had a really good time this weekend watching the England game. Okay, I know the score isn’t quite what we wanted but I really think we played pretty well and it was only that one big mistake that cost us. Ron though is now all doom and gloom saying we haven’t a hope but I always like to look on the bright side – and it was only the first game!
Come on England!

Well what a weekend – wasn’t the weather fabulous? We took full advantage of it with a few walks, nothing too strenuous but the views were magnificent as always. I love going to our ‘van in any weather but there’s something special about the sunshine and peace and quiet that really helps me to relax after a week at work.
Our latest holiday escapades

We’ve just got back from a lovely week away in the ‘van. A job in a seasonal business means from March until October work is busy and I was ready for the rest and our trip away in the caravan. It's so long since I can say that we have had such wonderful consistent weather and our new awning was great, really easy to put up and a lot lighter than our previous traditional models.
Something a little bit different

Dalek-image---small.jpgRather than the usual caravan update, I thought I’d write something a little bit different and update you on one of my neighbours, Jim. Not only is he a motorhome enthusiast but he loves Doctor Who and the daleks. So much so that he’s built his grandson, the ultimate present….3 real life daleks! Since he started his obsession in 2007, he’s even become an official world record holder.
Happy birthday to me!

BBQ---resized.jpgWhat a Birthday weekend for me and Ron, wall to wall sunshine, grilled fish supper to die for and a long warm evening with a good bottle of wine was just the start . It continued with another BBQ on Saturday with our daughter Chrissy and son-in-law Lee. I can't remember the last time we had all of our meals cooked outside! Apart from a long journey home on the Sunday due to a road closure, the weekend was perfect.
All things technical

Posted: 06/10/2011 - by Rita Sadler

I'm not a technophobe but I'm not big on the latest technology either. Ron sorts the telly and the sat nav, although I do have a Blackberry for work, where not only is it a phone but I can also pick up my Emails and browse the internet, which has its uses when you want to find something whilst away in the van.  Being an avid reader, this year I bought a Kindle and what a joy it is, especially when you go abroad. I can take as many books as I like and it weighs next to nothing, an asset when you tow a caravan. It slips in my bag or pocket although I would have liked it to have a backlight so I could read in the dark but I'm not grumbling when it holds so many books and so many are free! I haven't given up on the paper books, I just like the idea of mixing and matching.
Food and Pastimes

Posted: 08/10/2011 - by Rita Sadler

A few weeks ago, we visited a farmers market, I was very interested in a stall that was selling kits for making Rag Rugs. I remember my Granny making these, with a peg and bits of different coloured cloth cut from discarded clothes which were pushed through sacking. My mother hated these as she said they were dirt collectors. Strangely if anyone read in the Mail on Sunday, extracts from Pam Ayres autobiography, she also mentions Rag Rugs and gives the same reason why her mum disliked them so much. These are quite the in thing now a days and I just might have a go this winter, there was certainly plenty of interest at the market. Local brewed beer caught Ron's attention as well as the bakery and cheese stalls showing every different types of beers, bread and cheese you can imagine.
A belated Happy New Year

Posted: 25/01/2011 - by Rita Sadler

Sorry it’s been a while since my last blog. Work has been super manic and it feels like Christmas and New Year is a distance memory already! So what did I get up to over the Christmas break? As usual we shopped for England when it came to food!! Every year I stare at the left over food and promise myself that it’s the last time. However this year proved to be much like the others! Ron says ‘stop buying the freezer will not take anymore’ but it always does.  However the mince pies are now finished and the Poinsettia has lost most of its leaves and our middles have expanded so on with the diet!
Looking forward to the caravan season

Posted: 16/02/2011 - by Rita Sadler

Well it's not long now to the start of the season, which no doubt will depend on the state of the sites after a bad winter. Ron and I called at our site and we could see the Daffodils peaking through in the borders, can't wait for the call from our friend the site owner to say "Vans Out"
Easter and the Royal Wedding at the caravan

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged so thought I’d let you know what I’ve been up to now I’ve got 5 minutes to spare!! Ron and I spent the majority of April at the ‘van and whilst we had lots of sunshine, the wind was bitter at times especially late afternoon. Luckily we had our windbreaks at hand so Ron managed to keep it at bay.
